WHO WINS? YouTube vs. Blip.tv vs. Vimeo shootout
Here are your responses so far. All 3 services are of course awesome, and all have or will soon have embeddable HD and mobile-compatible videos. I’m creating a WordPress-based arts video portal and would like to embed HD, but gracefully display iPhone/mobile-friendly version. Blip.tv has been my #1 choice all along because they offer everything I need.
Right now I don’t think Vimeo allows mobile-friendly embeds, but Blip and YouTube do. However Vimeo says they will offer it soon, and in general I think they have the more attractive player. I’m already going to be using Blip to distribute everywhere, so I don’t really want to pay for Vimeo Plus in addition to Blip Pro unless there’s a clear advantage.
YouTube is probably my least favorite embeddable player, though I haven’t spent much time grokking the recent upgrades. We will be very active on YouTube but I don’t think it will be the main player for our web site.
I wrote a rather lengthy response to this before I realized how simple it should be:
If you’re trying to create a great show, build a real audience and actually become sustainable, HD and mobile are fairly insignificant at this point. They should not dictate which service you use. There are significantly bigger fish to fry.
Ultimately, blip.tv, Vimeo and YouTube all offer very useful services. If you’re serious about making quality web video, you should use all three.
And for the record, blip.tv has supported full HD and mobile since we launched in 2005. I had to throw that in there. :)
If you’re making art you should use Vimeo. If you’re making viral videos you should use YouTube. If you’re making a show you should use blip. There.
I think Mike makes this out to be way too simple. It’s not as if the lines are so clearly drawn. For example, I consider blip shows, and plenty of YT videos, to be art. But his point is still valid. It’s not about the technology. It’s not about lines of resolution. It’s not about who supports what phone. It’s about which company is best aligned with what you’re trying to do.
That’s the question you should be asking when you’re trying to figure out which service is “the best”.
+1. Shows are art.
Viral video art shows should probably buy a VCR and start dubbing tapes.
to be bigger. More noticable. Other than that, it all makes me hurt inside.
